If you have an AD account and you create an MSA account with the same name, then you are seeing this annoying screen.
Figure: Point of confusion
Figure: My MSA account using my AD email as the primary alias
The reason for that is that your email address was added as the primary alias to your MSA account.
To remove this association, youll have to replace it with another account and make that one primary.
Heres how Ive done that for my account.
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/profile/ and click Manage your sign-in email or phone number
- Add a new email – youll have an option to create a new one e.g. [email protected] or use an existing one
- Make the new email primary and remove the work email
If your Visual Studio subscription is linked to this MSA account and you remove the primary email address that will break your experience when you sign-in using your work email. Youll have to setup alternate account as described here https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/subscriptions/vs-alternate-identity
Also, according to the offical support ticket, you may not want to do this under the following circumstances:
You use a Windows phone running Windows 8. You will have to reset your phone.
You are part of our Xbox Developer community. You could lose access to some developer tools.
Your Visual Studio or MSDN subscriptions are linked to your Microsoft account.
